The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in five districts amid fears of possible violence tomorrow (23 June), the anniversary of the activities-banned Awami League.
The districts are Cox's Bazar, Madaripur, Sherpur, Gazipur and Moulvibazar. BGB Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam confirmed the deployment in a statement issued today (22 June).
The decision was made under instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs to help maintain internal law and order and address potential security threats, reads the statement.
BGB personnel will carry out duties in coordination with district administrations and law enforcement agencies from Monday evening until 30 June.
The statement adds that BGB members will remain on standby across other districts and can be deployed immediately if required.
Earlier, the government ordered the deployment of the army in several metropolitan areas and districts due to concerns over possible subversive activities by activists of the Awami League.
The areas under army deployment include Dhaka, Chattogram and Gazipur Metropolitan areas, as well as Narayanganj, Gopalganj, and Faridpur districts.
