BB asks National Bank to ensure cash supply in branches, ATMs from 15 Oct, offers full support
According to a press release issued by the central bank, Governor Mostaqur Rahman said National Bank's recent liquidity situation and customer withdrawal demands had come to the central bank's attention.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has instructed National Bank PLC to ensure adequate cash supply at all its branches and ATM booths starting 15 October 2026, enabling depositors to withdraw funds according to their needs, with BB assuring full support if needed.
The directive was issued today (8 October) during a meeting between Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman, National Bank PLC Chairman Prof Dr Melita Mehjabeen, and Acting Managing Director Jahidul Haq at the central bank headquarters.
According to a press release issued by the central bank, Governor Mostaqur Rahman said National Bank's recent liquidity situation and customer withdrawal demands had come to the central bank's attention.
He instructed the bank's management to take all necessary measures to protect depositors' interests, maintain public trust in the banking system, and ensure orderly banking operations.
According to a BSS News report, during the meeting, the Bangladesh Bank governor discussed the current liquidity situation of National Bank PLC and the demand of depositors for withdrawal of their funds.
He stressed the need for protecting the interests of depositors, maintaining public confidence in the banking system and ensuring uninterrupted banking operations.
The governor also instructed the National Bank authorities to take necessary measures to facilitate withdrawal of deposits by all depositors according to their requirements.
He also directed all branches and ATM booths of National Bank PLC to ensure adequate cash availability from 15 October 2026 so that depositors can withdraw money smoothly according to their needs.
The Bangladesh Bank governor emphasised that the measures should help safeguard depositors' interests while maintaining public confidence and ensuring normal banking operations.
During the meeting, National Bank Chairman Prof Dr Melita Mehjabeen informed the governor that recent interventions and measures taken by the central bank had helped re-establish good governance at the financial institution.
She added that positive changes had been made in senior management to improve the bank's overall operational efficiency and performance.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said the central bank's governor had summoned National Bank's managing director and chairman and instructed them to take measures to ensure customers could withdraw their money according to their needs.
He said Bangladesh Bank would provide full support if National Bank requires assistance in returning customers' deposits.
Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governors Md Habibur Rahman, Md Kabir Ahammad, Md Sarwar Hossain, and Md Anisur Rahman were also present at the meeting.
