Money changers now allowed to sell up to $3,000 to outbound travellers
The central bank says the measure was taken to facilitate the foreign exchange requirements of Bangladeshi nationals travelling abroad.
The Bangladesh Bank has raised the amount of US dollar notes and coins that licensed money changers can sell to Bangladeshi nationals travelling abroad against their annual private travel entitlement.
Under a circular issued today (8 October), licensed money changers will be allowed to sell up to $3,000 in US dollar notes and coins at a time, up from the previous limit of $2,000.
The central bank said the measure was taken to facilitate the foreign exchange requirements of Bangladeshi nationals travelling abroad.
Any remaining portion of a traveller's applicable annual travel entitlement may be released in notes and coins of other freely convertible or usable foreign currencies, subject to availability and the customer's remaining entitlement.
The revised facility is expected to give outbound travellers greater flexibility in obtaining foreign currency in cash from licensed money changers, said the central bank.
