A Bagerhat business owner has been jailed after Detective Branch police seized 2,042 gas cylinders, including expired ones, during a raid in Chitalmari upazila on Tuesday night (29 September).
The cylinders were seized from M/s Roha Enterprise at the upazila parishad intersection.
Following the raid, a mobile court sentenced the proprietor, Riyad Munshi, to two months' imprisonment without hard labour and fined him Tk10,000 for allegedly storing expired cylinders and exceeding the permitted storage limit.
Chitalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khadija Akter passed the order.
"The seized cylinders are estimated to be worth Tk21.81 lakh and have been taken to Chitalmari Police Station, where they will remain until further action is taken in accordance with the law," the UNO said.
Khadija Akter said the business was licensed to keep a maximum of 40 gas cylinders in stock.
"However, officials found 2,042 cylinders at the premises, including 174 filled cylinders and 1,868 empty ones. The proprietor could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the large stock. Many of the seized cylinders had also passed their expiry dates in 2022 and 2024," she added.
