2 children swept away, killed by onrush of upstream water in Ctg's Banshkhali
Both children were in the yards of their respective homes when strong currents flowing down from the east swept them away.
Two children died after being swept away by powerful currents caused by water from upstream in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram this morning (10 July).
The victims were Miraj, 6, son of Anwar Islam, and Ashik, 11, son of Kamal Uddin.
The incident occurred in separate locations of Baharchhara union.
Local resident Shahed Hossain told The Business Standard that both children were in the yards of their respective homes when strong currents flowing down from the east swept them away.
Locals later recovered the children and took them to hospital, where doctors declared them dead, he added.
Banshkhali Police Station Inspector Kartik Chandra Biswas said police have received reports of the deaths, adding, "We urge everyone to keep children away from the strong flood currents."
Banshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ruhul Amin said nearly half of the upazila remains underwater.
Relief operations are underway, but excessive flooding and disrupted communication have prevented aid from reaching several areas, he told TBS.
Earlier, on Wednesday (8 July), a three-year-old child named Mostakim drowned in floodwater in Raozan after days of heavy rainfall.
