Nasiruddin Patwary harassed during campaign, NCP blames Chhatra Dal
NCP condemns attack, calls for probe and security.
National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate for Dhaka-8 Nasiruddin Patwary was heckled and pelted with eggs while campaigning in front of Habibullah Bahar College in the capital today (27 January).
A video circulating on social media shows a crowd gathered in front of the college during the NCP candidate's campaign, with people chanting "bhua, bhua". At one point, eggs were seen being thrown at Patwari from the crowd.
Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division, told The Business Standard that they are looking into the matter.
Reacting to the incident, NCP Chief Organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah alleged in a Facebook post that the incident was carried out by activists of Chhatra Dal. He claimed the incident reflected political opponents' intolerance of dissent and a resort to violence.
In his post, Hasnat described Patwari as a "revolutionary fighter" of the anti-fascist movement and questioned what he termed the fear among rival groups, asking whether the attack was part of a broader political strategy.
Addressing voters of Dhaka-8, he urged them to consider whether to support candidates he alleged had amassed wealth during the previous regime and maintained business interests through political patronage, questioning their commitment to justice and public rights.
Hasnat also called on citizens to remain vigilant in protecting their rights and personal security, warning against entrusting the country's future to what he described as looters and mafia-backed forces.
NCP condemns attack on Patwary, calls for probe and security
The NCP has strongly condemned and expressed deep concern over what it described as a "sudden and premeditated" attack on its leader Nasiruddin Patwary.
In a statement today, the party said Patwari was attacked while attending a college programme, where assailants threw eggs, water, and bricks at him.
"The attackers chanted slogans of 'sheaf of paddy,' indicating that the violence was politically motivated and premeditated," reads the statement.
The party noted that a similar incident took place earlier on 23 January, when eggs and dirty water were thrown at Patwary during a roadside election campaign event. The party said the repeated nature of the attacks clearly shows a pattern of deliberate and targeted violence.
The NCP alleged that Patwary has long maintained a firm stance against extortion, terrorism, and corruption, and that a vested group, hiding behind political identities, is attempting to intimidate him and force him out of the electoral race due to his outspoken position.
"Violence, extortion, and intimidation cannot silence the people's voice," the party said, adding that such attacks not only threaten the safety of an individual candidate but also seriously undermine the prospects of a free, fair, and credible election.
The NCP urged the Election Commission to immediately conduct an impartial investigation into the incident, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice. It also demanded adequate security for Patwary and all candidates of the alliance.
The party further called for strict action against electoral violence to ensure a peaceful and democratic election environment.
