Texas man shot by ICE agent during foot chase
The man was taken to an Austin hospital and was reported to be in serious but stable condition
A man was shot once in the torso by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a foot pursuit in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, according to preliminary information.
The man was taken to an Austin hospital and was reported to be in serious but stable condition, says Arab News.
Details surrounding the shooting remain preliminary. ICE has not released an official statement, while local authorities do not yet have the man's name, age or nationality, or the exact circumstances of the pursuit.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed anger over the shooting, saying: "I am very angry and extremely disappointed that a person was shot on the streets of Austin by ICE."
The shooting occurred alongside what Watson described as a "significant increase, almost overnight" in ICE's local presence.
Watson also called for local law enforcement to participate in an investigation, saying: "I will say, frankly, from my perspective, the credibility of ICE doing some form of investigation just by itself and excluding others would not be appropriate."
US Representative Greg Casar backed calls for independent oversight, saying: "ICE has not been truthful in shootings in other cities."
"It is awful that this horror has come to our doorstep," Casar said.
Casar also said local leaders had previously warned federal authorities about the potential consequences of a sharp increase in ICE activity.
"A few weeks ago as we saw the ICE surge come ... I and others said that ICE needed to leave before someone was shot," he said.
The shooting occurred amid heightened deportation efforts under the Trump administration. Department of Homeland Security figures show nearly 51,000 undocumented migrants were arrested in August alone.
Heavily armed ICE operations have drawn national criticism over aggressive tactics, including previous incidents involving the shooting of US citizens, such as the fatal March 2025 shooting of 23-year-old Ruben Ray Martinez.
