The BJP government in West Bengal has decided to make the use of Bangla mandatory in its communications from 1 September, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told the state legislative assembly today.
He said Indian Home Minister Amit Shah had, in a letter, urged him to take steps to ensure the extensive use of Bangla at every level of the state administration.
"From 1 September 2026, the use of Bangla will be mandatory at every level of the state administration," Adhikari said.

Hindi will also be used for the state government's official correspondence with the federal government.
The state government will use Bangla across all public communication channels, including citizen services, digital governance systems, application forms, certificates, portals, websites, mobile applications, training materials, public signage, press releases and other official communications, Adhikari said.
"During this period, our government will arrange translators and all other necessary requirements," the chief minister added.
