Four killed, over 400 arrested as wave of post-poll violence continues in West Bengal
At least five police officers injured in firing during clashes
Post-poll violence across West Bengal continued following the BJP's sweeping electoral victory today (6 May), with waves of clashes, arson and targeted attacks reported from Kolkata, Asansol, Dinhata, Jamuria, Beliaghata, Murshidabad and surrounding districts, as sporadic confrontations quickly escalated into sustained and widening political unrest.
At least four people have been killed, as unrest that began during vote counting has escalated into sustained and widening political violence across the state. Police said more than 433 people have been arrested as security forces struggle to contain repeated flare-ups.
At least five police officers, including a woman officer, were injured after being fired upon during clashes in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, as a joint patrol came under attack amid rival TMC faction violence.
Among the dead, BJP worker Madhu Mondal was killed during a victory procession in New Town's Bhalliguri area following a clash with TMC supporters, while TMC worker Abir Sheikh was hacked to death in Birbhum's Nanoor. Another body, identified as a TMC worker, was recovered in Beliaghata, according to The Statesman.
In Kolkata, mobs attacked the New Market area, vandalising shops and political offices, while in Jamuria a Trinamool Congress (TMC) office was set ablaze.
Both the BJP and the TMC have blamed each other for the violence, with accusations of targeted killings and coordinated attacks on party workers and offices.
Meanwhile, Humayun Kabir, leader of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, moved the Calcutta High Court, alleging "systematic and politically motivated violence," including intimidation, attacks and administrative inaction.
Despite preparations for government formation, the situation across districts remains volatile, with authorities under mounting pressure to restore order amid continuing unrest.
