CJP announces fresh Jantar Mantar protest Sunday
Party vows to continue demonstrations despite detention of top leaders.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced a fresh protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar at 10am Sunday (11 October), defying the detention of its top leaders during today's demonstrations.
The announcement came amid a Delhi Traffic Police warning of possible restrictions across New Delhi and central Delhi.
Speaking at a press conference after police detained thousands of protesters, activists and political leaders during the day's demonstrations, CJP national organisational in-charge Ajinkya Shinde said the party would not back down.
"The government must have thought we will return home after the detentions today. This fear of Modi, Shah shows we have won half the fight," Shinde said.
CJP founder Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by Delhi Police from a flight at the airport on Saturday morning. They remain in detention.
The party's latest protest announcement followed police efforts to prevent its planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. The CJP had intended to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the deletion of millions of voters from electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro reopened entry and exit gates at all 45 affected stations late on Saturday evening, ending a 25-hour closure imposed ahead of the CJP's protest.
Restrictions initially covered 57 stations before being reduced to 45. The closures began at 9pm on Friday and were extended until 10pm on Saturday at the request of Delhi Police over security concerns.
Delhi Police have released all detainees from detention centres except the three CJP leaders, for whom due legal process will be followed, police sources told ANI.
