India launches first indigenous naval fleet support ship
They also need reliable logistics, maintenance, and support to keep vessels operating for extended periods.
India launched its first indigenous naval fleet support ship, "Surya," today (6 October), with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh saying the vessel will strengthen the Indian Navy's ability to operate for longer periods in the Indian Ocean region.
Speaking at the launch, Rajnath said naval operations in distant waters require more than warships.
They also need reliable logistics, maintenance and support to keep vessels operating for extended periods.
"Fleet Support Ships provide this essential capability through at-sea replenishment and sustained support to naval operations," he said.
Designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, "Surya" will be equipped with larger cargo and fluid-carrying capacity, maintenance workshops and a helicopter deck for multi-role helicopter operations. It will also have self-defence systems.
Rajnath said India should move beyond self-reliance and aim to compete in the global market.
He said Indian shipyards should seek opportunities to serve friendly countries and international markets, while expanding their capabilities in maritime technology, ship repair and maintenance, and engineering services.
