Fathima Thahiliya topples Left bastion to become first woman MLA in Kerala
UDF candidate defeats LDF’s T P Ramakrishnan in Perambra, ending decades-long dominance and marking a milestone for women’s representation in the party
Fathima Thahiliya of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has toppled a long-standing Left stronghold in Kerala's Perambra constituency to become the party's first-ever woman member of the state assembly.
According to The Hindu, she defeated Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener T P Ramakrishnan by 5,087 votes, securing 81,429 votes against his 76,342 in a seat held by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) since 1980.
Her victory is being seen as both an electoral upset and a historic breakthrough for the IUML, which had previously fielded only two women candidates in its history, neither of whom won, The Indian Express reported.
A lawyer by profession and a councillor in the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation, Thahiliya rose to prominence within the party as a reformist voice advocating greater space and representation for women. She previously led Haritha, the women's wing of the Muslim Students Federation, where she pushed for gender justice and student engagement on campuses.
Her campaign combined grassroots outreach with a strong social media presence, particularly targeting younger voters and highlighting development gaps in the constituency, according to The Hindu. The United Democratic Front (UDF) also leveraged allegations of communal campaigning by rivals to consolidate support.
Analysts attribute her win to a combination of anti-incumbency sentiment, shifting local political dynamics and effective voter mobilisation. The UDF had already made gains in local government bodies in the area, weakening the LDF's traditional dominance.
Thahiliya's political journey has also been marked by internal challenges. As noted by The Indian Express, she spoke out against alleged misconduct within the student wing, a move that led to her removal from a party post but strengthened her position as an advocate for accountability and reform.
