Nearly 200,000 people forcibly returned to Haiti as humanitarian crisis deepens
Nearly 200,000 people have been forcibly returned to Haiti in the first eight months of 2026, as the country faces worsening displacement, gang violence and a severe humanitarian crisis. Nearly 1.5 million people are internally displaced, half of them children, while armed gangs continue to receive illegal weapons despite a UN arms embargo.At an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Haiti called for faster deployment of the Gang Suppression Force, stronger national defence support and stricter enforcement of the arms embargo.
