Google Translate introduces speech practice feature on its 20th anniversary
Google Translate is marking its 20th anniversary with the launch of a new feature designed to help users improve their spoken language skills. The update introduces an AI-powered "pronunciation practice" tool that allows users to refine how they speak words and phrases across multiple languages.
Nick Fox, SVP of Knowledge & Information at Google, recently announced this on his X account. He wrote, " One of the toughest things about speaking a new language is getting the nuances of pronunciation just right. Now, you can get instant feedback with 'pronunciation practice,' which uses AI to analyze your speech and help you improve."
The app evaluates your pronunciation and provides feedback such as, "Some sounds were slightly unclear." You can also listen to how the app pronounces the text.
The feature is rolling out in the US and India, and currently supports English, Spanish, and Hindi.
This feature is similar to Duolingo, as it allows users to practice speaking words and sentences.
Previously, the company rolled out its live headphone translation feature to iOS and expanded its availability on Android devices to Germany, Spain, France, Nigeria, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, Bangladesh, and Thailand.
