Travel curbs rack up as Covid-hit China readies reopening

More countries around the world are demanding that visitors from China take Covid tests, days before it drops border controls and ushers in an eagerly awaited return to travel for a population that has been largely stuck at home for three years.

From Sunday, China will end the requirement for inbound travellers to quarantine, the latest dismantling of its "zero-Covid" regime that began last month following historic protests against a suffocating series of mass lockdowns.

Dubai airport expects passenger surge as UAE eases travel curbs

Dubai's state airport operator expects a "surge" in passenger traffic over the coming weeks and months, its chief executive said on Wednesday, after the United Arab Emirates announced an easing of travel restrictions from African and Asian countries.

The Gulf state, a major international travel hub, on Tuesday said it would scrap on August 5 a transit flight ban which Emirates airline later said applied to passengers travelling from 12 countries, including major market India. 

US issues travel curbs for Chinese Communist Party members

US President Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday issued new rules to restrict travel Chinese Communist Party members' and their families' travel to the United States, the New York Times newspaper reported on Thursday.

The new policy limited the maximum validity of travel visas for party members and their families to one month and a single entry, the paper reported citing people familiar with the matter.

Global travel expected to fall 10.5% this year, worst on record

International travel is expected to fall at least 10.5% this year, the biggest year-on-year drop as the rapid spread of coronavirus sows chaos across the tourism and leisure sector, according to industry consultancy Tourism Economics.

The latest estimate is a big downgrade from two weeks ago, when the consultancy was using the 2003 SARS outbreak as its benchmark and estimated travel rates would fall by 1.5%.

Iran's Zarif says US travel curbs on Iranian diplomats 'inhuman'

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday that tight US travel restrictions on Iranian diplomats and their families living in New York are “basically inhuman.”

The diplomats are subject to the same rules imposed by the United States on Zarif, who arrived on Sunday amid heightened tensions between the two countries.

They may only travel between the United Nations, the Iranian UN mission, the Iranian UN ambassador’s residence and John F. Kennedy airport.
