New VAR rule applied in key review, sends off Embolo as Argentina reach semi-finals

Switzerland forward Breel Embolo was sent off after a VAR review overturned an on-field decision during his side's 3-1 World Cup quarter-final defeat by Argentina, leaving Switzerland to play with 10 men after his dismissal in the first half.
Referee Joao Pinheiro initially awarded Switzerland a free kick and showed Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes a yellow card following a collision that left Embolo on the ground.
Under new Fifa World Cup rules allowing VAR intervention for cases of mistaken identity, the incident was reviewed to determine whether Embolo had committed simulation, says The Independent UK.
After reviewing the footage, Pinheiro announced to spectators that there was "clear simulation" by Embolo rather than a foul by Paredes. The referee withdrew Paredes' yellow card and instead showed Embolo a second yellow card, resulting in the Switzerland forward's dismissal.

Embolo appeared distressed after the decision and left the pitch in tears. Teammate Denis Zakaria escorted him from the field as Switzerland prepared to continue the match with 10 players.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Switzerland fought back after falling behind before Argentina eventually secured a 3-1 victory to advance to the World Cup semi-finals.
The decision also prompted a strong reaction from Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka, who confronted the referee during a later hydration break.
