Mbappé becomes all-time World Cup knockout scoring leader
The two goals took Mbappé to 10 career goals in FIFA World Cup knockout matches, making him the first player to reach double figures at that stage of the competition
France captain Kylian Mbappé delivered a record-breaking performance in his side's 3-0 win over Sweden in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 on Tuesday, scoring twice to become the leading scorer in World Cup knockout history and the highest-scoring European player in the tournament's history.
Mbappé, 27, opened the scoring in the 44th minute before adding a second goal in the 73rd as France advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face Paraguay. Bradley Barcola added France's third goal in the second half.
The two goals took Mbappé to 10 career goals in FIFA World Cup knockout matches, making him the first player to reach double figures at that stage of the competition.
The milestone moved him ahead of some of football's most prominent names, including Miroslav Klose and Pelé. Klose, among the tournament's leading scorers overall, recorded five goals in World Cup knockout matches during his career.
Mbappé also raised his overall World Cup tally to 18 goals, becoming the highest-scoring European player in the competition's history.
The French forward surpassed former Germany strikers Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 World Cup goals, and Gerd Müller, who finished with 14.
With France progressing in the tournament, Mbappé's latest performance added to a growing list of individual achievements while strengthening his role at the centre of the team's World Cup campaign.
