'Like father, like son': International football's goal-scoring dynasties span generations
Recent additions include Wales forward Lewis Koumas, who scored a stoppage-time equaliser against Ghana in June 2026, following in the footsteps of his father Jason Koumas and joining a list of football families whose international careers have crossed generations
International football has produced several goal-scoring family lines, with fathers and sons - and in some cases three generations - scoring for their national teams across different eras.
Recent additions include Wales forward Lewis Koumas, who scored a stoppage-time equaliser against Ghana in June 2026, following in the footsteps of his father Jason Koumas and joining a list of football families whose international careers have crossed generations, says the BBC.
Jason and Lewis Koumas (Wales)
Jason Koumas scored 10 goals in 34 appearances for Wales, with his first international goal coming at age 24 in a 2-1 friendly victory over Hungary in Budapest.
His son Lewis Koumas, a Liverpool academy product, scored his first international goal in June 2026 at age 20. The goal came in stoppage time against Ghana when he headed in a cross from Neco Williams to secure an equaliser.
Ian Wright and Shaun Wright-Phillips (England)
Ian Wright scored nine goals in 33 appearances for England, with his first arriving in a 1994 World Cup qualifier against Poland.
His adopted son Shaun Wright-Phillips later scored six goals for England. He marked his debut under Sven Goran Erikson with a "fantastic solo goal" after coming on as a substitute during a 3-0 victory over Ukraine.
Shaun's brother Bradley Wright-Phillips represented England at under-20 level but did not make a senior appearance.
Johan and Jordi Cruyff (Netherlands)
Johan Cruyff scored 33 goals in 48 matches for the Netherlands and became one of football's most influential figures through his role in developing "Total Football".
His son Jordi Cruyff scored once in nine appearances for the national side, finding the net in a 2-0 victory over Switzerland at Villa Park during Euro 1996.
Jordi later moved into management and executive roles, including positions at Barcelona and Ajax.
Enrico and Federico Chiesa (Italy)
Enrico and Federico Chiesa became the first father-son pair to score at the European Championship.
Enrico scored seven goals in 17 appearances for Italy, including the team's only goal against the Czech Republic at Euro 1996.
Twenty-five years and 12 days later, Federico scored the opening goal in extra time against Austria during Italy's Euro 2020 campaign.
Abedi Pele, Andre and Jordan Ayew (Ghana)
Abedi Pele scored 33 goals in 73 appearances for Ghana and was named African Footballer of the Year three times.
His sons Andre and Jordan Ayew have both reached 120 international caps.
Andre has scored 24 goals for Ghana, including three at World Cups, with his first international goal coming against Burkina Faso in 2010.
Jordan has also scored 33 goals, matching his father's total. He completed the family's scoring sequence in 2012 with a goal against Lesotho.
The family represents one of the relatively rare cases where a father and two sons have all scored internationally.
George and Timothy Weah (Liberia/USA)
George Weah scored 18 goals in 75 appearances for Liberia before later serving as President of Liberia between 2018 and 2024.
His son Timothy Weah, who was born in Brooklyn, elected to represent the United States.
Timothy has scored seven goals in 50 appearances, including a goal against Wales at the 2022 World Cup.
The Gudjohnsen family (Iceland)
Arnor and Eidur Gudjohnsen shared the field during an international match against Estonia in 1996, when 17-year-old Eidur replaced his 34-year-old father as a second-half substitute.
Eidur later scored 26 goals in 88 appearances for Iceland.
The family's scoring record has extended into a third generation. Andri Gudjohnsen scored for Iceland in a 4-1 defeat by Wales in 2024, while Sveinn Gudjohnsen has also scored for the national side.
A third brother, Daniel Gudjohnsen, has made five appearances and is seeking his first international goal.
Other notable father-son scoring pairs
Several other families have also produced international scorers across generations.
Mel Charles scored six goals in 31 matches for Wales, while his son Jeremy scored his only international goal in a 1-0 victory over Bulgaria at Wrexham.
Romania's Gheorghe Hagi scored 35 goals for his country and his son Ianis has scored eight.
Portugal's Sergio Conceicao, remembered for a hat-trick against Germany at Euro 2000, was followed by his son Francisco, who scored at Euro 2024.
Argentina's Diego Simeone scored 11 goals in 106 appearances. His eldest son Giovanni has scored once internationally, while Giuliano scored against Brazil in 2025.
The Kluivert family could also produce three generations of international scorers. Kenneth Kluivert scored twice for Suriname, Patrick Kluivert scored 40 goals for the Netherlands, and Justin Kluivert is seeking his first international goal.
