Warner Bros Discovery has officially confirmed that a fifth Matrix film is in development, marking the next chapter in the long-running sci-fi franchise, according to Nerdist.
The studio disclosed the project in a letter to shareholders, referring only to the "next installment of The Matrix."
It did not reveal any details about the story, release timeline, or cast. The upcoming film will be written and directed by Drew Goddard, best known for The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and the upcoming adaptation of Project Hail Mary.

Whether Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Neo remains unclear. Reeves previously told Empire in 2021 that he would return if invited by Lana Wachowski, but Warner Bros. has not confirmed any casting.
Released in 1999, The Matrix became one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, spawning three sequels and reshaping the genre with its philosophical themes and groundbreaking visual effects.
The fifth film will be the first in the series not directed by either of the Wachowskis.
