Kojima teams up with Xbox for Physint after PlayStation cancellation
Hideo Kojima has handed Xbox a major win in its long-running rivalry with PlayStation, with the Death Stranding and Metal Gear creator moving his upcoming action-espionage game Physint to Microsoft after Sony walked away from the project.
PlayStation reportedly cancelled Physint in June, prompting Kojima Productions to spend the following three months searching for a new publishing partner. Xbox has now stepped in, not only taking over publishing duties but expanding its relationship with Kojima into film and television.
The move is a notable shift for Kojima, whose relationship with PlayStation stretches back decades and includes the Death Stranding franchise. Xbox is already publishing his next game, OD, a horror title developed with filmmaker Jordan Peele, making Physint another major Kojima project under Microsoft's banner.
The partnership could also give Xbox a stronger foothold in Japan and other Asian markets, where the platform has historically struggled to compete with PlayStation.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was honoured that Kojima chose Xbox, while Kojima confirmed that Physint remains in development and will continue to push the action-espionage genre.
With Xbox steadily adding Kojima projects to its portfolio, the latest deal gives Microsoft another high-profile victory in its battle for gaming's biggest creative talent.
