Japan rules against Pokémon patent claim

According to GamesFray, the Japan Patent Office has invalidated one of Nintendo's patents in its lawsuit against Palworld developer Pocketpair, ruling the claim unoriginal and dealing a major blow to Nintendo and The Pokémon Company.

The legal action, filed in September 2024, accused Pocketpair of infringing three patents related to Pokémon's core monster-capture mechanics. Two patents focused on the processes of capturing and releasing creatures, while another covered the ability to ride and interact with them — all key features shared by both Pokémon and Palworld.

Nintendo argued that Palworld had replicated its signature systems, effectively "reskinning Pokémon" with survival and crafting elements. Pocketpair countered that these gameplay concepts long predated Pokémon, citing titles such as Monster Hunter and ARK: Survival Evolved, and contended that the idea of capturing and bonding with creatures was too generic to be patented.

The dispute has sparked renewed debate over creativity and ownership in gaming, questioning whether fundamental gameplay mechanics can be claimed by any one company. The remaining patents in Nintendo's case are still under review by the Japan Patent Office.
