Bangladeshi short Nuri steps into the Cannes spotlight
Bangladeshi cinema marks a significant new milestone as Nuri, a 16-minute Bangali short film, has been officially registered in the prestigious Short Film Corner (SFC) | Rendez-vous Industry at the 79th Festival de Cannes.
Written and directed by Mithun Jaman, the film is currently available for industry viewing at the festival's professional market, running from 17 to 20 May. Producer Hasib Zuberi Shihan and director Jaman are on-site in France to represent the project.
"The SFC is a vital platform connecting short filmmakers with global industry professionals, including distributors, programmers, and sales agents," Shihan stated, expressing his delight at entering the international market.
Set against the scenic backdrop of Cox's Bazar, the world's longest sea beach, Nuri follows an 11-year-old girl—portrayed by a local non-actor child—who discovers resilience and hope through an unlikely bond with a newborn foal.
"In a time of so much instability, Nuri reminds us that hope can survive in the most fragile bonds," Jaman explained, noting how external forces shape our emotional, lived experiences.
The film boasts a robust creative team, including co-producer Himesh Kar, cinematographer Mohammad Arifuzzaman, and sound designers Sayba Talukdar and Jawad Parvez. Amzad Hossian composed the music, whilst editing was handled by Sameer Ahmed and Shihan Zuberi. International post-production was supported by Atlanta-based Moonshine Post Production, which managed the colour grading.
Nuri is produced by Hasib Zuberi Shihan and Bashar Georgis under the banner of Team Platform Ltd., a Dhaka-based creative production house specialising in live-action and animation. The company previously achieved critical acclaim with their animated short Song of Whales, which secured the South Asia Best Short Award at AniMela and the Gold Award at DigiCon6 ASIA Bangladesh.
