A trillionaire in 400 square feet: Inside Elon Musk’s Texas home
The house, rented from SpaceX, measures about 400 square feet and includes a living area, bedroom, kitchen and a bathroom with a combined tub and shower.
Despite becoming the world's first trillionaire following SpaceX's blockbuster IPO earlier this month, CEO Elon Musk continues to live in a relatively modest home in Texas, according to a report by Gulf News.
The report, citing Fortune, said Musk's primary residence is a compact prefabricated home in Boca Chica, near SpaceX's Starbase facility, where the company is developing its Starship programme.
The house, rented from SpaceX, measures about 400 square feet and includes a living area, bedroom, kitchen and a bathroom with a combined tub and shower.
Musk has previously praised the residence, describing it as "kinda awesome".
After moving to Texas in 2020 and relocating major business operations there, Musk sold much of his real estate portfolio in California.
However, reports suggest he still owns or is linked to properties near Austin valued at around $35 million.
Even so, Musk has repeatedly maintained that his main home remains the much smaller property near Starbase.
In a post on X in 2021, he said he lived in a house worth around $50,000 that he rented from SpaceX.
The home was built by housing startup Boxabl and is designed as a 20-foot-by-20-foot unit equipped with basic amenities, according to Chron.
Gulf News, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that companies associated with Musk also own at least three properties in Austin's West Lake Hills area.
Those homes reportedly range from 6,000 to 9,000 square feet and feature swimming pools.
Accounts from The Wall Street Journal suggest Musk's living arrangements are simple.
His mother, Maye Musk, once remarked after visiting that there was "no food in the fridge" and described basic sleeping arrangements, including a converted garage space and shared facilities.
Although compact, the house includes features such as a Murphy bed, built-in storage, kitchen fittings and energy-efficient elements.
The report noted that Musk has long preferred living close to his workplaces.
Biographer Walter Isaacson described the residence in 2023 as a "spartan two-bedroom" home where Musk would often sit at a wooden table making phone calls.
Musk has previously spent nights at Tesla factories during challenging production periods, reflecting his work-centred approach.
According to Gulf News, living near Starbase allows Musk to remain closely involved with SpaceX's projects, including Starship and the company's broader space exploration ambitions.
His lifestyle, the report said, reflects a preference for minimalism and mission-driven work over luxury living, a contrast that continues to attract public interest.
