A collection of 688 handwritten reflections by Mahatma Gandhi on truth, non-violence, and service has sold for Rs16.2 crore at a Saffronart auction, setting a world record for an Indian historical document sold at auction.
The writings were addressed to Gandhi's close associate and freedom fighter Anand T Hingorani and were penned over two years following the death of Hingorani's wife, Vidya.
The daily messages, offering guidance, reflection and encouragement, were later compiled into a book, titled "A Thought for the Day".
The collection was part of the auction titled "Gandhi: From the Collection of Anand T Hingorani", which featured 86 lots of Gandhi's letters, manuscripts, photographs, and personal belongings.
According to the auction house, the collection offers an unusually personal glimpse into Gandhi's life, documenting not only his public role in India's independence movement but also his private correspondence and relationships.
