Failure is not the end: Learning to fail before we succeed

Failure has become a familiar fear among students and young people today. Somehow, an entire generation seems convinced that it is falling behind. Whatever we achieve, it rarely feels like enough. Someone gets better grades, someone finds a job earlier, someone earns more, and someone else appears to have figured out life altogether.

Then comes the inevitable question: Why am I not there yet?

Perhaps the real problem is not failure itself, but our fear of being left behind.

On the International Day for Failure, observed on 13 October, it is worth remembering something many of us heard as children: failing does not necessarily mean losing. Sometimes, it simply means we are still trying.

A generation afraid of failure

The fear of failure is not unique to you or me. It is something many young people experience, especially when they feel pressured to meet expectations before they have had enough time to discover what they are capable of.

Some people can accept disappointment and move forward. Others find it difficult to recover when things do not go as planned. Repeated setbacks can wear down confidence and motivation, sometimes making it easier to stop trying than to risk being disappointed again.

Yet we often label ourselves failures before we have given ourselves a fair chance.

Remember the story of the spider we heard at school? It repeatedly tries to climb, falls and starts again until it finally reaches its destination. As children, we may have understood it as a simple lesson in perseverance. Perhaps adulthood is when we begin to understand what it really means.

Adulthood rarely follows a straight path

Growing up brings an uncomfortable realisation: effort does not always produce immediate results.

A degree does not guarantee a job. Submitting an application does not guarantee an interview, and an interview does not guarantee an offer. There are other candidates, different circumstances and requirements we may not yet meet.

That does not automatically make us failures. It means we are navigating a world in which outcomes are not entirely within our control.

We cannot simply wish ourselves into the careers or lives we imagine. Progress takes time, and sometimes it requires us to recognise where we need to improve, adjust our expectations or pursue a different direction.

The challenge is to keep working towards our goals without turning someone else's success into evidence of our own inadequacy.

Stop running someone else's race

Comparison makes this challenge even harder. We look at someone's promotion, salary, position or lifestyle and begin questioning our own progress. Their achievements become a measure of what we think we should already have accomplished.

This pressure is particularly familiar in Bangladesh, where many young graduates enter a competitive job market carrying enormous expectations about what should happen immediately after graduation. Finding employment can take time, and the uncertainty of that period can make it feel as though everyone else is moving forward while we remain stuck.

But we rarely know the full story behind another person's success. We do not see every rejection, sacrifice, advantage or struggle that may have shaped their journey.

Someone else's timeline is not ours. If another person gets an opportunity before us, it does not mean our opportunity will never come.

Instead of asking, "Why them and not me?", we might ask a more useful question: What can I learn, improve or do differently next time?

Give yourself the chance to try

There is a difference between failing at something and never giving yourself the chance to attempt it.

Fear can persuade us to abandon an ambition before we begin. We convince ourselves that we are not good enough, that someone else will do better or that trying will only expose our weaknesses.

But without trying, we may never discover what we are capable of becoming.

Give yourself the chance to learn, even when success is uncertain. Work towards something until you can honestly say that you gave it your best. If the outcome is not what you hoped for, the effort does not have to be wasted.

You may gain experience, recognise a weakness or discover a skill that needs developing. You may even realise that what you were chasing was never quite what you wanted.

Failure does not always make us wiser automatically. We have to be willing to reflect on what happened and learn from it. But when we do, a disappointing outcome can offer something that success sometimes does not: a reason to reconsider how we approach the next attempt.

Success has a history of failure

Many well-known figures have spoken about failure as part of the pursuit of success. Henry Ford is widely credited with the saying,

"Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently."

Henry Ford

Such words are easy to admire when we are feeling hopeful. They can be harder to believe when we are dealing with rejection or disappointment.

The point is not that every failure will eventually lead to success. But even then, the experience can change how we understand ourselves and what we want from life. We can carry its lessons forward without allowing it to determine everything that comes next.

Remember the struggles behind the life you have

There is another kind of success we often overlook: the life our parents have worked to build for us.

If we are sitting comfortably today and expecting more from them, have we ever wondered how many times they had to begin again to provide that comfort?

How many plans fell apart? How many disappointments did they endure without telling us? How many difficult decisions did they make because they wanted their children to have opportunities they never had?

As we grow older, we begin to see our parents not simply as the people who provide for us, but as individuals who have had their own uncertainties, ambitions and setbacks.

Their lives remind us that the comforts we inherit may be the result of years of effort that we never witnessed.

Before becoming resentful of someone else's fortune, it is worth asking whether we are prepared to work towards the future we want, for ourselves and perhaps one day for our own families.

This does not mean that hard work guarantees success or that everyone begins with the same advantages. Circumstances matter, and some obstacles are far more difficult to overcome than others. But recognising those realities need not prevent us from taking the next step available to us.

Failure is not the opposite of success

We have heard the saying that failure is the pillar of success so often that it can sound like a cliché. Yet it continues to resonate because it reminds us that achievement is rarely as effortless as it appears from the outside.

Failure can force us to reconsider, rebuild and sometimes begin again. It can teach us to approach a problem differently or recognise when it is time to change direction. If success eventually comes, we may understand its value more deeply because we know what it took to get there.

Being an adult means accepting that life will sometimes say no. It also means learning to live with uncertainty, taking responsibility for our choices and finding the courage to move forward when we can.

Failure itself is not always a choice. How we respond to it, when circumstances allow, often is.
