NCP expels Ctg leader following arrest in rape case

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has permanently expelled Md Aftab Majumder Joy, a member of its Chattogram city unit convening committee, after his arrest in a rape case.

The decision was announced in an order issued today (23 July) and signed by Riduan Hridoy, acting office and publicity secretary of the city unit. 

The order said Aftab had been accused of activities contrary to the party's ideology and organisational code. Besides, he had faced arrest warrants in eight cases and was a convict of 13 years' jail in a case. 

Based on an emergency decision of the committee and instructions from its convenor and member secretary, his membership was permanently revoked with immediate effect.

Chandgaon Police Station OC Jasim Uddin told The Business Standard that Aftab was arrested last night (22 July) from the BDR Field area under Halishahar Police Station in connection with the rape case. He was later produced before a court. 

According to the case statement, Aftab met a second-year college student through Facebook and developed a romantic relationship with her. 

The complaint alleges that on 14 July he took her to a residential hotel in Chandgaon on the promise of marriage and raped her. He later refused to marry her and cut off communication. 

The complainant later learned that Aftab was already married and had a child.

A case was filed on 19 July under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, leading to his arrest.
