Wild elephant dies after hillfall injuries in Teknaf
The elephant died at around 10am, nearly a day after the accident.
A wild female elephant died this morning (12 July) while undergoing treatment after falling into a ditch following a landslide in the hilly Uthonti area of Teknaf in Cox's Bazar yesterday (11 July).
The elephant died at around 10am, nearly a day after the accident.
Assistant Conservator of Forests (Teknaf-Ukhia) Md Monirul Islam told The Business Standard.
According to the Forest Department, the incident took place on Saturday at Shiyailagona Hill in the Naittongpara area of Ward No 1.
While descending the slope, the elephant slipped and rolled nearly 300 feet down the hill.
Local residents spotted the injured elephant and informed the Forest Department.
Forest Department and the Teknaf Upazila Livestock Office officials rushed to the spot and began emergency treatment.
Monirul Islam said no elephant herd was found near the injured animal, adding that it may have strayed close to the locality in search of food due to the prolonged rainfall.
The fall left the elephant with severe spinal injuries, paralysed its hind legs and caused deep abdominal wounds, officials said.
Abdur Rashid, range officer of the Teknaf Range, said veterinarians from the Teknaf Upazila Veterinary Hospital and Dulahazara Safari Park treated the elephant at the site, as the rugged terrain made it impossible to move the animal.
According to the Forest Department, the elephant was estimated to be 20 to 25 years old, around 30 feet long and 10 feet tall.
The Shialyaghona Hill area is home to at least 23 Asian elephants.
A veterinary team will conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death before the elephant is buried in the forest, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Anik Chowdhury said.
