People want to see visible progress on Teesta master plan: Shafiqur
'We know this is a massive project and that it will take time to complete, but if the work is carried out sincerely, people should be able to see visible progress,' says Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman.
Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said the people want to see visible progress in implementing the Teesta master plan, urging the government to turn its commitment into action.
Speaking to reporters outside Chattogram's Shah Amanat International Airport this morning (10 July), he said his party has strongly advocated for the project's implementation and that the government has also pledged to carry it out.
"Now is the time to fulfil that commitment," said Shafiqur.
"We know this is a massive project and that it will take time to complete. But if the work is carried out sincerely, people should be able to see visible progress. That is what the public expects."
Commenting on Chattogram's recurring waterlogging, the Jamaat chief said it is the government's responsibility to resolve the problem.
"Chattogram is the country's commercial capital. Yet even a small amount of rainfall leaves many parts of the city submerged, causing immense suffering for residents. Drains overflow and people face repeated hardship," he said.
He added that political parties have a responsibility to bring public grievances to the government's attention.
"We are fulfilling that responsibility. At the same time, we are standing beside flood-affected people to the best of our ability. Today, we are also travelling to Banshkhali to support those affected by the floods," Shafiqur stated.
From Chattogram airport, Shafiqur travelled to the flood-hit areas of Banshkhali upazila, where he listened to residents' accounts of hardship and distributed relief supplies among affected families.
There, he said many people have lost their homes, crops and other assets in the recent floods and are living in severe hardship.
The Jamaat chief urged the government to take effective steps to ensure the swift rehabilitation of those affected and provide them with the necessary support.
