Belgium, Senegal set for first-ever face-off in World Cup knockout stage tonight
Senegal will be aiming to end a difficult run against European opposition at the World Cup.
Belgium and Senegal will meet for the first time in history when they face off in the Fifa World Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday (1 July), with the two sides having never previously played each other in any competition.
Senegal will be aiming to end a difficult run against European opposition at the World Cup.
The Lions of Teranga have lost each of their last four World Cup matches against European teams, with defeats to the Netherlands and England in 2022 followed by losses to France and Norway at the 2026 finals. Belgium, meanwhile, have enjoyed a strong record against African opponents at the World Cup.
The Red Devils have won three, drawn two and lost one of their six meetings with African sides. Their only defeat came in a 2-0 loss to Morocco during the group stage of the 2022 tournament.
The match will also mark Belgium's first World Cup knockout-stage meeting with African opposition, as all six of their previous matches against African teams came in the group stage.
