On 24 June, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela less than a minute apart, marking the country's strongest seismic event since 1900. The disaster left more than 1,430 people dead, over 51,000 missing, and an estimated $6.7 billion in damage. Earlier on 8 June, a magnitude 7.8 quake hit the Philippines, killing at least 82, injuring over 1,300, and triggering a tsunami warning.
