RAB detains 13 brokers at three govt hospitals in Dhaka
The identities of those detained were not immediately available.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) today (29 June) detained 13 suspected brokers, including women, during a drive at three government hospitals in Dhaka.
RAB-2 conducted the drive at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Institute, and the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor) in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar beginning in the morning.
The identities of those detained were not immediately available.
Speaking at a press briefing, RAB-2 Deputy Commander Squadron Leader Nifaz Rahman said intelligence information indicated that an organised broker syndicate had been causing harassment to patients at the hospitals.
The objective of the day's operation was to identify and arrest members of the broker syndicate, ensure exemplary punishment through the mobile court, raise public awareness and help create a transparent and patient-friendly environment, he said.
He added that the operation was carried out based on confidential information, resulting in the detention of 13 brokers.
Mobile court executive magistrates will take further legal action against them, he added.
Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital Acting Director Dr Nanda Dulal Saha said the hospital administration cooperated with the drive, adding that such operations by RAB make their work easier.
Asked whether any hospital staff were involved, he said no evidence had been found against government employees.
