National University approves Tk801 crore budget for 2026–27
National University has approved a Tk801.04 crore budget for the 2026–27 financial year at its 28th Senate session, held at the university's Senate Hall in Gazipur on Saturday, 27 June, 2026.
The session also approved the university's revised budget of Tk664.08 crore for the 2025–26 financial year.
National University Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman Professor Dr ASM Amanullah chaired the session and presented various initiatives taken to improve the quality of education at the university.
The initiatives include signing Memorandums of Understanding with more than 150 local and foreign universities, research institutions and industrial organisations, including institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom, to introduce time-befitting and employment-oriented education.
The vice-chancellor also highlighted the launch of an international-standard apprenticeship programme, with a target to create 50,000 apprentices, and steps to introduce third-language learning opportunities.
At the Multi-Language Learning Institute, students can learn Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, and French.
Other initiatives include skills-based and technology-driven curriculum development, a green campus programme, syllabus reform, modernisation of teacher training, compulsory English and ICT courses at the undergraduate level, and expansion of moral and humanistic education.
The university has also set a target of 40 lakh students planting 2 crore trees over the next 5 years.
Under the "Learning with Happiness" programme, sports and cultural activities will be carried out across the country, the vice-chancellor said.
National University Treasurer Professor Dr ATM Zafrul Azam presented the proposed budget for 2026–27 and the revised budget for 2025–26.
The proposed budget for 2026–27 estimates revenue income at Tk617.14 crore, leaving a deficit of Tk183.91 crore.
The revised budget for 2025–26 estimates revenue income at Tk625.03 crore, with a deficit of Tk39.06 crore.
In his address, Senate Chairman Professor Dr ASM Amanullah said the world is passing through an unprecedented era of transformation driven by Artificial Intelligence, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, knowledge-based economies and global competition.
"In this era, the responsibility of a university is not limited to awarding degrees. Its responsibility is to develop human resources capable of adapting to change," he said.
"We believe the future Bangladesh will be built by a generation that is not merely a carrier of information, but a creator of knowledge; not only jobseekers, but employment creators; not victims of change, but leaders of change," he added.
Senate members participated in the discussion on the Senate chairman's address, offered suggestions, and assured their support for implementing the initiatives of the current National University administration.
The session began with the national anthem. A condolence motion was later placed over the deaths of distinguished citizens, teachers, officials and employees, and was approved unanimously. Members observed a one-minute silence in their memory.
Senate Member and State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, Members of Parliament Imran Ahmed Chowdhury, Wares Ali Mamun, Abul Hossain Khan and GM Siraj, Syndicate Member Professor Dr AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, and Bangla Academy President Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haque were present, among others.
Ministry of Public Administration Senior Secretary Md Ehsanul Haque, Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Abdul Khalek, and divisional commissioners joined the session online.
National University Pro-Vice-Chancellors Professor Md Lutfor Rahman and Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Press Institute Bangladesh Director General Faruk Wasif, and 70 Senate members also attended the session.
Syndicate members, invited guests, deans, the registrar, teachers, and heads of different departments of National University were also present.
