DMP arrests 26 Awami League leaders, activists in separate drives

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested 26 leaders and activists of the activities-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations during separate drives in different areas of the capital.
DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Niaz Mehedi confirmed the arrests today (23 June).
He said the arrests were made during operations conducted by eight police stations across Dhaka yesterday (22 June). Legal proceedings against those arrested are underway.
According to DMP, Dhanmondi Police Station arrested 10 people, Mohammadpur Police Station eight, Ramna Police Station two, Khilkhet Police Station two, and Bangshal, Kadamtali, Mirpur and Turag police stations one each.
ADC Niaz said the drives were carried out against members of Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
He added that such operations would continue to maintain public safety and normalcy in the law and order situation.
Notably, on 18 June, Police Headquarters issued a nationwide alert over fears of possible clashes between Awami League activists and members of other political parties, centring on the party's founding anniversary today.
Police Headquarters directed all police units across the country to remain on alert and take necessary precautionary measures.
Additionally, the government has deployed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in five districts amid fears of possible violence today, the anniversary of the activities-banned Awami League.
The districts are Cox's Bazar, Madaripur, Sherpur, Gazipur and Moulvibazar.
