Measles outbreak: 5 more children die; death toll rises to 666
A total of 1,009 patients presenting with measles-like symptoms were admitted to various hospitals nationwide
Five more children have died from measles and measles-like symptoms across the country in the 24 hours leading up to 8am today (18 June), according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With the latest fatalities, the total death toll has risen to 666.
During the same 24-hour period, a total of 1,009 patients presenting with measles-like symptoms were admitted to various hospitals nationwide.
Among these new hospitalisations, some 139 cases were laboratory-confirmed as measles.
According to the DGHS data, out of the total deaths recorded so far this year, at least 93 children died from laboratory-confirmed measles infections.
Additionally, some 573 children succumbed to illness with measles-like symptoms.
The health directorate's data further showed that between 15 March and 8am today, a total of 10,773 measles cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.
According to the latest health bulletin, a total of 89,904 suspected measles cases have been identified across the country.
Of these, some 70,503 patients have already been discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment.
