Messi shatters four World Cup records in single match against Algeria
The match on 16 June was also Messi's 200th international appearance for Argentina
Lionel Messi rewrote the FIFA World Cup record books on 16 June as Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0, with the 38-year-old captain scoring a hat-trick to extend his status as the greatest player in the tournament's history.
According to Guinness World Records, Messi now holds the record for most World Cup matches played (27), most minutes played at a World Cup (2,394), and most FIFA World Cup editions played by a single footballer (6).
His hat-trick against Algeria also made him the oldest player to score a hat-trick in World Cup history, at 38 years and 357 days.
The Argentina captain is now the joint top scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals, levelling the record held by Germany's Miroslav Klose.
The match on 16 June was also Messi's 200th international appearance for Argentina, adding yet another milestone to an already historic evening.
