Measles outbreak: Writ seeks accountability, Tk2cr compensation for each family after 352 child deaths
The petitioner submitted the application and requested the court to issue a rule asking the authorities to explain why their inaction in controlling the measles outbreak should not be declared illegal
A writ petition was filed with the High Court today (10 May) seeking a directive on the government to pay Tk2 crore in compensation to the families of each of the 352 children who recently died of measles across the country.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallob said he filed the petition in the public interest, telling the media that the health secretary and other relevant authorities have been made respondents in the writ.
The petitioner submitted the application, citing various media reports on the deaths and requested the court to issue a rule asking the authorities to explain why their inaction in controlling the measles outbreak should not be declared illegal.
In the petition, Pallob sought a court directive to the government to provide Tk2 crore in compensation to each affected family even before the final disposal of the writ.
He further prayed for a permanent order for appropriate compensation to the bereaved families upon the conclusion of the legal proceedings.
The hearing on the writ petition is likely to take place in the High Court later this week, the lawyer added.
