Volume of crude oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz in 2025 Q1 by destination
The Strait of Hormuz, nestled between Oman and Iran, remains one of the world's most vital energy chokepoints, with quarter of global maritime oil trade flowing through it. In the first quarter of 2025, an average of 20.1 million barrels of crude oil, condensates, and refined fuels flowed through its narrow waters each day representing 26.6% of global seaborne oil trade. As tensions escalated with Tehran targeting vessels transiting the strait, the US–Iran confrontation sent shockwaves through energy markets. Shipping costs surged, and supertanker rates in the Middle East soared to unprecedented highs.
