The penalty kick has been part of every World Cup since 1930, when Mexico's Manuel Rosas became the first player to score from the spot against Argentina. Nearly a century later, Lionel Messi—who became the tournament's all‑time leading scorer in 2026—also set an unwanted milestone as the first player to miss three penalties in World Cup history.
