Mbappé scored the winning penalty against Paraguay to send France into the quarter-finals, becoming the World Cup's all-time leading knockout scorer by breaking Leonidas' record set in 1938. Leonidas as well as Nejedly never played a World Cup group-stage match, having featured only in the 1934 and 1938 editions, the only two tournaments played entirely as straight knockout competitions.
