UK to continue standing by Bangladesh over Rohingya crisis: Sarah Cooke
Sarah Cooke says the UK remains committed to supporting Rohingya refugees and host communities while pushing for international action and accountability.
The United Kingdom will continue to stand alongside Bangladesh in addressing the Rohingya refugee crisis, recognising the country's extraordinary generosity in hosting more than one million Rohingya refugees, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke said today (4 October).
Speaking at a session of the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026, she said the UK remains committed to supporting both Rohingya refugees and host communities, maintaining international attention on the crisis and working towards a sustainable solution.
"The only sustainable solution is the voluntary, safe and dignified return of the Rohingya to Myanmar when conditions allow," she said.
The high commissioner said the UK has continued to push for international action on the crisis.
At this year's United Nations General Assembly, the UK co-sponsored discussions aimed at maintaining international focus on the Rohingya crisis, she said.
As the penholder on Myanmar at the UN Security Council, the UK continues to press for international action and accountability, Cooke said.
The UK also remains one of the largest donors to the Rohingya response, providing support to Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh while extending humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities in Myanmar's Rakhine State.
"The Rohingya crisis remains one of the clearest examples of the need for stronger regional and international cooperation," she said.
