95 candidates contesting for 35 director positions in BGMEA elections
A total of 95 candidates have submitted their nomination forms to contest the 35 director positions in the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) board in the upcoming biennial elections for the 2025-2027 tenure.
Of the candidates from the two contesting panels, Sammilita Parishad and Forum submitted their nomination papers on Saturday at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara.
Sammilito Parishad's 43 candidates submitted 44 nomination forms. Of them, 33 are contesting from the Dhaka region for 26 director positions, while 10 nomination forms have been submitted for nine director positions from the Chattogram region.
On the other hand, the Forum panel submitted 46 nomination forms – 34 from the Dhaka region and 12 from the Chattogram region.
Earlier on Thursday, six Oikko Parishad candidates submitted their nomination papers.
BGMEA Administrator Md Anwar Hossain welcomed the leaders and candidates of both panels.
The Sammilita Parishad panel, led by Md Abul Kalam, panel leader and managing director of Chaity Group has submitted its nomination papers.
Accompanying him were The Sammilita Parishad panel chief election coordinator and former BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, Sammilita Parishad panel President and former BGMEA President and Sammilita Parishad President Qazi Moniruzzaman and chief election coordinator Faruque Hassan and other senior leaders.
The Forum panel, led by Mahmud Hasan Khan (Babu), the panel leader and managing director of Rising Fashions, submitted its nomination papers.
He was accompanied by former BGMEA Presidents Anisur Rahman Sinha and Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez), Forum President MA Salam, chief election coordinator Faisal Samad, and other senior Forum leaders.
After the nomination submission, Mohammad Iqbal, chairman of the Election Board and former chairman of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), delivered his concluding remarks.
He thanked all candidates and asked for their cooperation to ensure a smooth, free, fair, and transparent election.
The preliminary list of candidates will be published soon.
According to the election schedule, the last date for withdrawing nominations is 6 May.
The election board will publish the final list of candidates on 8 May.
The election is scheduled to take place on 28 May in Dhaka and Chattogram regions.
The election board said with the support of all stakeholders, it is working diligently to conduct the election in the quickest and most transparent manner possible.
