NSU, DPDT sign MoU to strengthen patent, technology transfer collaboration
North South University (NSU) and the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 23 September to strengthen collaboration in intellectual property, patent protection, innovation and technology transfer.
The MoU was signed on 23 September after a seminar organised by the NSU Technology Transfer Office (TTO) titled "The Role of Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) for Patents", according to the press release.
The seminar brought together senior officials from DPDT and the University Grants Commission (UGC), as well as NSU leadership, faculty members, researchers and administrative staff.
During the discussion before the signing ceremony, NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury emphasised making patent and intellectual property protection processes more accessible and straightforward for researchers and innovators.
He also highlighted the need to place greater emphasis on protecting intellectual property generated in Bangladesh, saying stronger protection would help promote local innovation and allow the country to move forward with greater independence.
DPDT Director General Md Jahangir Hossain, Deputy Director Md Habibur Rahman and Director Dr Ashok Kumar Roy also spoke at the session, sharing insights into Bangladesh's patent and intellectual property landscape and the opportunities available to researchers and innovators.
Representatives from the University Grants Commission were also present, including Project Director Professor Dr Asaduzzaman and Programme Officers Abu Taleb Md Munir and Md Ferdushur Rahman.
NSU Treasurer, the deans of the university's four schools, faculty members, researchers and administrative staff also attended the programme.
Under the MoU, NSU and DPDT will work more closely to promote intellectual property awareness, support patent-related activities and strengthen institutional capacity for research commercialisation and technology transfer.
The collaboration is expected to create greater opportunities for NSU faculty members, researchers, students and innovators to access guidance and support related to intellectual property protection.
NSU said the agreement marks another step in its efforts to build a stronger ecosystem for innovation, intellectual property protection and technology transfer.
