EU invites PM to address Global Gateway Forum
European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller called on Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (6 July), formally delivering an invitation from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for the third Global Gateway Forum, scheduled for June 2027.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also been invited to deliver a keynote address at the forum. The event is expected to pave the way for a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Ursula von der Leyen.
Participation in the forum is expected to unlock further investment opportunities for Bangladesh in sustainable infrastructure, digitalisation, energy, transport, health and education under the European Union Global Gateway Initiative.
During the meeting, Michael Miller also presented a letter from European Union Vice President Kaja Kallas to Dr Khalilur Rahman, congratulating him on his election as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The two sides reviewed the full spectrum of Bangladesh-European Union relations and explored avenues for deeper cooperation in business, trade and investment, technology, and regional and multilateral affairs.
Discussions also covered the proposed Bangladesh-European Union Business Forum 2027, forthcoming high-level engagements, prospects for a Bangladesh-European Union Free Trade Agreement, and other areas of shared interest.
The two parties exchanged views on regional and global developments, including issues related to the United Nations and the Rohingya crisis.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the longstanding Bangladesh-European Union partnership for mutual benefit.
