DIU holds 13th convocation, 4,020 students graduate
Daffodil International University (DIU) held its 13th convocation today, 28 January 2026, at Daffodil Smart City, with the participation of 4,020 graduating students from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Of the graduates, 3,391 completed undergraduate degrees, while 629 completed postgraduate degrees.
In recognition of academic excellence, five graduates received the Chancellor's Gold Medal, four were awarded the Chairman's Gold Medal, and three received the Vice-Chancellor's Gold Medal.
The convocation was presided over by Professor Dr S M A Fayez, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, who attended as the representative of the President of Bangladesh and Chancellor of the university, and formally conferred degrees on the graduates.
The convocation address was delivered by Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, noted economist, former adviser to the caretaker government, and Chairman of BRAC.
In a message sent to the ceremony, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser, said the convocation marked the beginning of a new chapter rather than the end of an academic journey. Referring to the concept of a "three-zero" future—zero net carbon emissions, zero concentration of wealth, and zero unemployment—he said graduates of an entrepreneur-friendly institution like DIU were well positioned to lead change and contribute to building a more inclusive and environmentally sustainable world.
Professor Dr S M A Fayez, UGC Chairman, said graduates were entering a rapidly changing world shaped by innovation and technology. He highlighted DIU's progress in integrating education with modern technology and said conscience must remain stronger than academic credentials, urging graduates to serve the nation with moral responsibility.
In his address, Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said Bangladesh had moved beyond a phase of survival but now faced challenges related to quality, innovation, and ethics. Warning against the middle-income trap, he stressed the need to strengthen knowledge-based work and problem-solving capacity among the younger generation.
He said DIU's emphasis on research and innovation, including work on climate-resilient agriculture, financial inclusion, and sustainable urban development, was helping build intellectual capital vital for economic resilience.
Dr Md Sabur Khan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DIU, said the convocation was about responsibility as much as recognition, adding that the university aimed to produce job creators rather than job seekers.
Professor Dr M R Kabir, Vice-Chancellor, said the education and skills gained at DIU had prepared graduates to lead in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, adding that they now carried the responsibility of representing the university's values at home and abroad.
Valedictorian Swapnil Akter Nu said her journey at DIU had shaped her personal and academic growth, encouraging fellow graduates to pursue their goals with integrity, resilience, and confidence.
Recipients of the Chancellor's Gold Medal were Swapnil Akter Nu, Jakia Akter, Sourav Gardia, Ariful Rahman and Muntasir Sarkar.
The Chairman's Gold Medal was awarded to Anjir Rahman Khan, Md Tuhin Islam and Md Abu Bakar Siddique.
Recipients of the Vice-Chancellor's Gold Medal were Shahriar Shahid, Bayezid Chowdhury and Halima Akter.
The programme concluded with cultural performances by university clubs, followed by a concert by the band Warfaze.
