Bangladesh seeks Canadian support for livestock safety, trade
Bangladesh has sought technical cooperation from Canada to bolster its livestock sector, enhance animal-health regulations and food safety, and improve the country's capacity to export animal products to global markets.
A delegation from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, led by Secretary Md Delwar Hossain, met with Director General Dr Prarthi Muthukumarasamy of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and other agency officials at the agency's Ottawa headquarters on Tuesday, 14 July 2026.
The Bangladeshi delegation also comprised Director General Md Shahzaman Khan and Deputy Director Md Shariful Haque of the Department of Livestock Services.
Discussions focused on livestock development, animal health, veterinary services, feed quality control, disease surveillance, research, and institutional capacity building.
The two sides discussed the implementation of sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical cooperation, information sharing, workforce development, and modernisation of laboratory and food inspection systems.
Both sides expressed interest in expanding bilateral trade in animal products, according to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
Secretary Md Delwar Hossain said the government was prioritising the production of safe animal-origin foods that meet international standards and strengthening Bangladesh's export capacity.
He noted that technical assistance from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency could help Bangladesh further improve its regulatory and institutional capacity.
Director General Dr Prarthi Muthukumarasamy welcomed the delegation and expressed interest in closer cooperation on food safety, animal health, and regulatory frameworks.
He also expressed hope that exchanges of knowledge, technology, and experience between relevant institutions of both countries would increase.
Both sides expressed optimism that the meeting would lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation in livestock development, food safety, and international trade.
