Bangladesh, Rosatom discuss Rooppur progress, first unit’s grid connection
Bangladesh and Russia's state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, discussed the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and the timeline for its first unit to begin generating electricity.
Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev held a bilateral meeting in Moscow yesterday, 9 October, according to the press release.
The discussions focused on the overall progress of Bangladesh's first nuclear power project and preparations to connect its first unit to the national grid.
Likhachev said a trial grid connection for electricity from the first unit, equipped with a VVER-1200 reactor, could be achieved as soon as possible.
He said the project would play a vital role in strengthening Bangladesh's energy security and supplying environmentally friendly and cost-effective energy.
Mahbub Anam said the 2,400-megawatt Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant would meet approximately 11% of the country's total electricity demand.
Likhachev also said the plant's second unit would begin commissioning and initial start-up activities next year.
The two sides also discussed further expansion of Bangladesh's nuclear energy sector and stronger bilateral cooperation, drawing on the achievements and experience gained through the Rooppur project.
