Remittance inflow rises to $2.97b in August
The country received $2.68 billion in remittances in August 2025.
Bangladeshi expatriates sent home $2.97 billion in August, up 10.82% from $2.68 billion in the same month last year, according to updated Bangladesh Bank data released today (1 September).
However, monthly remittance inflows have remained below $3 billion for three consecutive months. The country received $2.82 billion in June and $2.86 billion in July, after recording more than $3 billion each month from December 2025 through May this year.
Despite the recent slowdown, remittance inflows in the first two months of FY27 reached $5.82 billion, compared with $4.90 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Bankers attributed the continued strong inflow partly to favourable exchange rates offered through formal banking channels. The dollar was available at around Tk122-Tk123 last month, alongside the government's 2.5% cash incentive for remittance recipients.
Expatriate Bangladeshis sent more than $35.5 billion in remittances in FY26 – the highest annual inflow on record.
Bankers said August's inflow was encouraging compared with the previous two months. However, dollar demand remains subdued amid weak private-sector credit growth and lower imports of capital machinery. At the same time, banks are maintaining relatively comfortable dollar liquidity, they said.
