Women's progress vital for country's future: Dr Zahid
The social welfare minister says educating and empowering women can strengthen family finances and accelerate national development.
Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Dr AZM Zahid Hossain today (28 August) said the country's future will advance through the greater progress of women.
"If daughters in a family are educated and capable of working, the family's financial capacity will increase," he said while speaking as chief guest at a programme at the Upazila Parishad Hallroom in Ghoraghat this afternoon.
The minister said women make up half of the country's population and are an important part of the workforce.

Bringing women and female students forward would help accelerate national development and build a developed Bangladesh, he added.
He also said the government was providing mothers and daughters with financial assistance and encouragement to make families self-reliant.
The government grants should be properly invested in income-generating activities such as vegetable cultivation, gardening and poultry rearing, he added.
"We want a Bangladesh where everyone will live well," he said, stressing mutual cooperation and an inclusive society irrespective of religion and caste.
At the programme, the minister distributed one bicycle each among 60 female students of Ghoraghat.
Cheques worth around Tk1.5 crore were also distributed among 11 cancer and kidney patients, 96 students, 106 distressed people and 64 indigenous people, besides supporting development works at 18 mosques and six temples.
Ghoraghat UNO Rubana Tanzin presided over the programme while local BNP leaders, government officials and social and political representatives were present.
