Winning public trust biggest challenge: IGP tells new police officers

Winning public trust is one of the biggest challenges facing the police, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Ali Hossain Fakir said today (8 October), urging newly appointed officers to carry out their duties with honesty, sincerity and impartiality.

"Policing must remain responsive to public expectations and sensitive to human rights as well as the needs of women, children and elderly citizens," he said while addressing a briefing for officers of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch, appointed to different units of Bangladesh Police, at the Hall of Integrity at Police Headquarters.

He said the police force had to chart a new course following the mass uprising of August 5 and the changes in the country's social and national circumstances.

The newly appointed officers must work to meet public expectations with renewed commitment and stand beside the people as ambassadors of the police force, he said.

Describing policing as both a service and a challenge, the IGP urged the officers to prepare themselves to deal with emerging challenges while continuously improving their knowledge and experience.

He stressed the need for complete impartiality, strict adherence to laws and regulations, and professionalism in carrying out their responsibilities.

The police chief also urged the officers to build relationships of trust with the public and provide services based on their needs and expectations.

Several newly appointed officers shared their experiences from field-level training at the programme and pledged to perform their duties professionally and work to earn public trust.

A total of 72 officers, including 66 men and six women, have joined Bangladesh Police as assistant superintendents of police (ASP) under the 43rd BCS (Police) batch.

Additional IGP (Administration) AKM Awlad Hossain, who chaired the programme, also urged the new officers to discharge their duties in line with the expectations of the nation.
