Robi completes nationwide network modernisation after Chattogram rollout
Over 3,500 sites modernised in Chattogram, Cumilla and Noakhali within 180 days
Robi Axiata has completed its nationwide 4G network modernisation programme after upgrading more than 3,500 sites across Chattogram, Cumilla and Noakhali over 180 days.
Announcing the completion at an event titled "Celebration of Robi's 4G Network Modernisation in Chattogram" at Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View yesterday, Robi said it completed the final phase with virtually no disruption to customers.
The programme aims to build a stronger and more reliable 4G network ready to support future 5G services across the country, it said.
Robi, the country's second-largest mobile network operator, said modernisation has improved customers' 4G experience by up to 20% on average in three regions.
Indoor 4G coverage has also expanded. About 10% more people now have access to enhanced indoor connectivity, according to Robi.
Deployment of Multiple Input Multiple Output technology has improved signal quality and network coverage, it added.
Upgraded infrastructure has also reduced energy consumption by up to 12%, it said, adding that the reduction supports its efforts to cut carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.
At the event, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Chairman Major General (Retd) Md Emdad Ul Bari described large-scale modernisation within a short period as a significant engineering achievement.
"Robi's investment in improving connectivity will further strengthen Bangladesh's telecommunications sector," he said.
Robi Managing Director and CEO Ziad Shatara said completion of the Chattogram phase marks the conclusion of the company's nationwide network transformation programme.
He said Robi had previously modernised more than 4,800 sites across greater Dhaka as part of the programme.
The project is also said to have reduced call drops by 20% and improved indoor network experience by up to three times for nearly half of its customers.
Robi said the completion of the nationwide programme will strengthen its network capacity and support the country's growing digital ecosystem.
Malaysia-based Axiata Group Berhad holds a 61.82% stake in the company, while India's Bharti Airtel holds 28.18%. Public shareholders hold the remaining 10%.
